Jobless rate rises to 2%, 68,400 new jobs in Q1

Today Online reported that The Republic added 68,400 new jobs last quarter following the creation of 62,500 positions between October and December, the Ministry of Manpower said yesterday. But despite the record job creation, the seasonally-adjusted jobless rate rose to 2 per cent, from 1.7 per cent in the previous quarter.
In a separate survey conducted by the Economic Development Board (EDB), sentiments were mixed over the outlook for the manufacturing sector for the next six months. A weighted 3 per cent of employers surveyed in six sectors expect to hire more workers in the second quarter.
The expected rise in employment would come largely from the transport engineering sector, which anticipates more rig-building, ship-repairing and conversion activity.
Singapore employers added a record number of jobs last quarter, as the economy's fastest expansion since 2003 encouraged companies to increase hiring to meet demand for goods and services.
